Economic Impact of Planning Delays in Sydney Metropolitan North-West and South-West Growth Areas

Client: Stockland

Urban Enterprise was engaged to assess the economic impact of constrained residential development in the north west and south west growth areas in metropolitan Sydney.

The assessment found that development timeframes in Sydney’s north west and south west had slowed significantly compared to previous years. The slower rates of development were a result of a range of factors including planning approval delays and limited council resources; delays in infrastructure delivery; and land ownership fragmentation.

The constrained development in the growth corridors significantly reduced the capacity to deliver new residential product to the market efficiently and productively, thus resulting in a significant loss of economic activity for the State having regard to residential lot and dwelling construction, and dwelling occupation.
